Presets are meant to enhance images that have been lit properly. Where there is flat lighting, presets generally do not work very well. It is recommended to first apply the preset and then adjust your Exposure and White balance afterwards.
If you use Lightroom or Adobe Camera Raw you're going to want to equip yourself with some presets! Presets should be applied to improve the images you've taken to keep them consistent for your finishing touched in Photoshop. Presets are not meant to CORRECT a poorly lit or improperly lit image!
When uploading Presets to Lightroom you simply click on the "import presets" button. These are .XMP files incase you're thinking they are something else.
You must UPDATE your software in order for everything to run correctly!
